Signs to have your restaurant’s HVAC checked

The HVAC is just not running like it should

First, if your HVAC system is no longer running properly like it’s supposed to, it is obviously time to have it inspected, as it could very well be an indicator of something else than a mechanical issue. Depending on the age and use of the system preparing to replace it in its entirety may be the most cost effective route to go. Many cases however a experienced restaurant HVAC technician will be able to better explain if repairs will work better for your needs.

Keep in mind that as HVAC systems get older they will need repairs more frequently, and depending on the rarity of the system parts may increase in price over time. If you notice a dramatic increase in service calls needed to keep it running then it may be time to start considering upgrading your unit to something newer and often more efficient.

Smokey Kitchen

If your kitchen starts to get smokey, and food grease or debris are accumulating on surfaces, these may be signs that your vent hood and makeup air unit are inadequate. It is important to have these inspected as soon as you realize a difference as it not only hurts your air quality for your employees but also could become a fire hazard.

Higher energy bill

Higher energy bills could point to a range of issues that may be going wrong with your HVAC system. Cracked ductwork and inadequate insulation could be responsible, or there could be a blockage or build up preventing your system from working efficiently. There may also be a malfunctioning part causing your system to draw more energy to continue to operate. If these early signs are addressed promptly then it is possible to prevent a more costly repair or total breakdown later. Have an HVAC professional examine your system, ductwork and insulation to ensure that they’re working properly.

Lingering Smells

A few food aromas are expected in any restaurant, but they should be mostly contained within the kitchen. If your dining room smells similar to your kitchen, that is a sign of inadequate ventilation. Your exhaust fans might be broken or your venue may not be getting enough makeup air. Having your system inspected to make sure it is running properly and is that the fans are able to handle the demand is important to keeping your restaurant running smoothly.
